| At first glance, the term servant implies degradation or sub humanism. In actuality, the word we use for ministry is a Latin word derived form the word serve. Now it doesn’t seem so lowly, does it? We attach the word ministry to God’s work – to God’s chosen. The two are definitely related, but to minister (or serve) is not for the paid professional only. You and I have been created to serve. In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul says, “We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (2:10) In fact he says that it’s mostly the job of the “paid professionals” to “…prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” (4:11-12) The body of Christ is built up and strengthened by each of us spending our time, energy and gifts on behalf of others and in the name of the LORD. St. Peter says in his first letter, “Each should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in various forms.” (4:10) Here at the Vineyard we encourage one another to worship with the entirety of our lives, and that means that in our daily routine of work and relationships we must be giving ourselves away on behalf of others. In addition to serving through our individual circumstances, we also provide a number of ways for you to get involved in serving within the Vineyard Community. |
